The prohibition against possessing Chometz on Pesach applies only to Chometz that is owned by a Jew. One can however store Chometz owned by a non-Jew in one’s property provided it is kept in a sealed area that is set aside for that purpose. These areas are rented to the non-Jew until after Pesach when one is allowed to buy back his (or her) Chometz. Due to the complexity of these transactions, one usually appoints a rabbi to sell and buy back his (or her) Chometz at the appropriate times.
